History
Our Journey
The story of JXG (Janashakthi Group) began long before the name was known. In 1952, our Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Mr. C.T.A. Schaffter, took his first steps into insurance as a young clerk. Over the following decades, he built deep expertise, eventually rising to lead Carsons’ insurance division before embarking on his own entrepreneurial journey. By the early 1970s, he had become Sri Lanka’s number one life insurance agent, setting the stage for what would grow into one of the country’s most extraordinary financial legacies.
By 1978, alongside his insurance career, Mr. Schaffter ventured into a cottage industry in Bogahawatte, founding Kotmale. What began with just two workers producing butter and cheese gradually evolved into one of Sri Lanka’s most recognised dairy brands. While Kotmale grew steadily in the background, his true focus remained on insurance. Through Protection & Indemnity (P&I), he introduced the country’s only individually owned insurance house, which went on to become a pioneering force and the leading broker in Sri Lanka’s insurance industry.
In 1994, Janashakthi Life was launched as Sri Lanka’s first specialised life insurer, setting a new benchmark for innovation and integrity in financial services. From there, the Group grew rapidly, entering general insurance, investment banking, finance, and real estate, supported by bold acquisitions.
Today, JXG stands as a financial conglomerate, with a proud legacy built on innovation, values, and strength. What began with a single step into insurance has evolved into an exceptional journey that continues to empower progress for people, businesses, and communities across the nation.

His fearless advocacy, people-first leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit laid the foundation for Janashakthi’s extraordinary journey. What began as a bold entrepreneurial dream evolved into a financial conglomerate built on values, he both lived by and instilled across the Group.
In recognition of his transformative impact on the industry, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 16th Asia Insurance Industry Awards in 2012 and at the Home Lands Sri Lanka Cricket Awards 2024. Today, his vision continues to guide and inspire us, driving JXG to create exponential value, embrace innovation fearlessly, and uphold a legacy of purpose-driven growth for generations to come.
Three Generations, One Purpose
In Sri Lanka, the story of the Schaffter family is one of rare continuity. A legacy carefully carried across three generations and counting. It began with C.T.A. Schaffter, whose vision laid the foundation for a purpose-driven enterprise built on integrity, fortitude and long-term thinking. Values that continue to guide JXG (Janashakthi Group) today.
The second generation - Prakash, Manjula, Ramesh, and the late Dinesh, strengthened and expanded that foundation, steering the business through evolving markets while safeguarding its enduring values.
Today, Sashi and Tehan mark the entry of the next generation into the business. They are the first of the third generation of the Schaffter family to step forward, with others set to follow. In doing so, they carry forward not just leadership, but a conscious legacy where responsibility, stewardship and shared purpose are preserved and passed on with the same care as ownership.
